LGS patrons The Katona Twins played to a sold out St. George’s Hall Concert Room on the 19th June. Despite the fact that England were playing in the European Championships that evening, the full house was treated to an amazing exposition of virtuoso playing and seemingly telepathic co-ordination between these two exceptional players.
They opened their first set with an arrangement of Boccherini’s Introduction and Fandango in their characteristic style of standing a la electric guitarists.
They sat down to play the JS Bach French Suite (BWV 816) which was this reviewer’s personal favourite of the evening. Their interpretation I would say exceeded any other duo’s playing of Bach. The tonal variation and sweetness was absolutely exquisite and there was astonishing accuracy, particularly during the movement in which the guitars emulated the sound of the harpsichord.
A shorter ‘Romance’ by Paganini followed before the duo returned to their standing a rip roaring ‘Vivaldi in the 21st Century’ rounded off the first half in emphatic style.
The second half began with Peter Katona’s own composition, loosely based on Dostoevsy’s ” The Brothers Karamazov” which we reviewed back in November [http://liverpoolguitar.org/2011/11/24/review-katona-twins-at-pacific-road-arts-centre-20-nov-2011/]. The Twins followed this with a uniquely different interpretation of Albeniz’s Cordoba, and ended the set with a rousing rendition of Tango Suite by Piazolla featuring many percussive techniques on the body of the guitars as they stood and literally belted this one out.
The audience gave the Twins a tremendous reception at the end of the full set and were treated to a wonderful arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody for the encore which again demonstrated the tremendous tonal and style variation these players can illicit from their guitars – from sweet lyrical tones to harsh rock style power chords.
Quite simply, these performers should not be missed whenever they perform near you 🙂
